What was the AR700?

The AR700 was a bikepacking race held annually on the second Saturday in August at 7am, with its routes evolving over the years. Initially, the race featured a one-way ride along forestry service roads (FSRs) parallel to the Rocky Mountains. Later, it transitioned to an out-and-back course starting and finishing in Canmore. The current route differs slightly from previous iterations; it avoids Banff, climbing out of Canmore in a manner similar to the 2021 race.

For those interested in exploring different versions of the race, Ride With GPS offers various route options from past years. Users can also modify or create their own versions to suit their preferences. This current route is particularly challenging and typically requires at least three days to complete. Participants should be prepared for potential delays due to weather, mechanical issues, forest fires, trail conditions, road washouts or wildlife encounters.

The AR700 route is known for its risks; there have been serious injuries, and forest fires have occurred during the race. It is crucial for participants to ensure their safety by informing someone of their whereabouts, carrying a tracking and emergency signalling device, protecting and defending against dangerous wildlife and people encounters (Vehicles), be prepared for damaged or missing sections of trails, knowing how to source and purify water, and being able to monitor quickly changing weather and fire conditions to plan necessary reroutes. Riders are on their own, as no rescue or monitoring is in place.

Despite these challenges, the AR700 offers riders a memorable experience with its breathtaking scenery and the freedom of adventure. Whether choosing to ride parts of it or tackling the entire course, it promises an unforgettable adventure.

If you're up for an adventure give the AR a spin whenever it beckons, or on the second Saturday in August. Be ready to start at 7:00 AM. You may find like-minded friends eager to enjoy the trail. Remember, there are no winners or losers here, just a community enjoying the journey together.

Finally, This Site, The Bike Route, and anything else here is independent of and has no association with the original AR700 event, or its organizer.

Riders are on their own, as no rescue or monitoring is in place. If after reading the above you wanna show up and ride on August 9 2025 or do your own ITT click the link to register.
